Nairobi County Governor Dr Evans Kidero on Thursday announced that the county government has set Sh200 million to refurbish roads leading to Dandora dumpsite.

The governor also announced that the county government will be spending Sh1 million daily for the next 45 days to address the garbage menace in the city.

At the same time, the environment chief officer, Leah Oyake, has resigned following the garbage collection scandal at City Hall. Read more

Ecotricity ecobond three raises almost £19 million

ecobond three offered investors a return of 5.5% per annum (or 6.0% per annum for Ecotricity customers), the company will use the funds raised  to build six renewable energy projects already in the first stages of construction – between them they will generate enough green energy to power over 10,000 homes each year.

Ecotricity founder, Dale Vince, said: “This is our third and biggest ecobond yet and it’s quite an incredible outcome given the background we’ve been working in these last few months – the relentless attacks on the renewable energy industry by the new Tory government, which can’t have exactly boosted confidence in the sector.  This is a fantastic show of support, from our customers and the wider public. World’s largest steel company to use rabbit gut microbe to cut emissions

LanzaTech technology will be installed at ArcelorMittal’s steel mill in Ghent,using a microbe to turn carbon monoxide into ethanol fuel

The world’s largest steel producer is planning to spend €87m to use a microbe originally found in a rabbit’s gut to turn a waste gas that contributes to global warming into fuel.

Bioengineering company LanzaTech’s technology will be installed at ArcelorMittal’s steel mill in Ghent, Belgium, with the customised Clostridiummicrobe capturing carbon monoxide and converting it into ethanol. Read more

Plastic litter taints the sea surface, even in the Arctic

In a new study, researchers from the Alfred Wegener Institute, Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research (AWI) show for the first time that marine litter can even be found at the sea surface of Arctic waters. Though it remains unclear how the litter made it so far north, it is likely to pose new problems for local marine life, the authors report on the online portal of the scientific journal Polar Biology. Plastic has already been reported from stomachs of resident seabirds and Greenland sharks. Read more
